In this season of thanksgiving, it's natural to start thinking of all our blessings. I have been on several planes over the last few weeks due to our Florida park expansion. I have seen many military during the trip. I am so thankful for their sacrifices. A tiny token of appreciation if free active military with ID admission to Dinosaur World and $1 off dependants. Dinosaur World is announcing a hung new expansion! This includes a 12 acres expansion of everything dinosaur! A 22,000 square foot building will house a new indoor Prehistoric Museum, giftshop and office space. There will be more parking added to accommodate the growing number of educational groups and buses. More bathrooms will be installed. A new dinosaur playground will be unveiled as well as more picnic areas. And of course new dinosaurs will be moving in to show off the new entrance and gateway to the dinosaur walk.

I've just returned from a tourism conference where we were learning more cool things on how to serve you all better. It's funny I haven't posted in a week when several of our speakers were talking on the importance of social media. I've been out of the office and in lots of meetings. I'll get back on the ball next week, in the meantime, here are some notes to remember...

Here's the word on the new dinosaurs at the Florida location...

Two juvenile and 3 baby Maiasaurus -This is significant because the Maiasaurus is called the "good mother" dinosaur. Fossils of this dinosaur have been found with eggs and baby dinosaurs making paleontologists think it was a more involved mother than most dinosaurs.

Two juvenile Torosaurus - This name means "pierced lizard". It had an enormous skull of about 8 feet long. It had a huge frill neck with a short snout horn and two eyebrow horns. It also had a toothless beak.

Two juvenile Iguanodon - Actually, just one is at the park now. The other is on exhibit at MOSI until December 31. These dinosaurs were plant eaters. The unique thing about Iguanodons was the long spike on each thumb.

Stay tuned for photos coming as soon as they get settled in the park.

We have one gift shop director that handles the merchandise for all three locations. This is a big and fun job becuase two of our locaitons have giftshops of over 5,000 square feet. And the smaller Florida location will be getting a bigger giftshop hopefully within the year.

Here's the good news - she's going on a trip next week to buy lots of cool new items for the giftshop. I'll keep you posted on what's coming.

Pterodactyl

Pterodactyl name means "winged fingers". They were flying reptiles ranging from a few inches to over 40 feet. They had large brains and good eyes. There were lightly build with hollow bones, long skulls and smaller bodies. they had bristle like teeth or no teeth and ate fish, insects and scavenged dead animals. Their wings were covered with a leathery membrane that was thin but tough.

You'll find several pterodactyls at Dinosaur World.

Cone see our twins

New Maiasaura twins just moved to the dinosaur walk from the "nursery" where they were "born". These twins will join the rest of their family at our Kentucky location.

This family atmosphere is particularly important to the Maiasauras because it was the first dinosaur found with its nest, young and eggs. This suggests that Maiasaur nurtured their young, which is contradictory to most dinosaur species. The Maiasaur name even means "good mother".

It's time for our biggest special event of the year. This weekend, Saturday and Sunday, September 25 and 26th is $1 Admission weekend for local residents in Kentucky and Texas.

Allen, Barren, Edmonson, Hart, Metcalfe, Monroe and Warren Counties (those that geographically touch the home county of Barren) will receive $1 cash admission this weekend with proof of residency (such as driver's license or bill stub).

Somervell, Hood, Erath, Johnson and Bosque counties in Texas (also those that geographically touch Somervell) will receive the $1 cash admission.

This is the dinosaur valley. You top a hill and look down into this great view. The walk is designed to start off with smaller dinosaurs and end with larger ones. And, we have our dinosaurs in families so you'll see more than just one.

Fossil Dig Review

What are some other fossils in our dig? Visit and take some home with you!

Turitella - This is a type of gastropod shell. The coiled shapes of the shell can be siin in teh polished rock.
Ammonite - This is a cephalopod which once swam in the shallow seas. It has a soft body and had tentacles like a squid. It has a chambered shell and resembles a snail.
Crinoid - They are flower like echinoderms which grew in colonies on the sea floor. Some were free swimming but most were fixed by a flexible stem. It resembles a screw.
Gastropods - The name means "stomach foot" and it had a head with eyes and a mouth including a flattened foot for crawling.
Shark Teeth - All teeth in our dig are shark teeth.
Sea Urchin - This is a spiny, hard shelled animal that lived on the sea floor.
Brachiopod - They are small marine invertebres with a shell that has two valves.

Amber

Day two of our fossil dig review... One of the many fossils we have in our Fossil Dig that you can take home with you as a momento of your trip is Amber.

Amber is fossilized tree sap. Somtimes, you can even find insect inclusions in our Fossil Dig amber. This is when insects were trapped in tree sap which then hardened and fossilized.

In the movie "Jurassic Park", scientists extracted dinosaur DNA from insects that had bitten dinosaurs and were trapped in amber.

We also have Amber jewlery for sale in the giftshop.

Orthoceras

One of the favorite exhibits at Dinosaur World is the Fossil Dig. Here, you can sift thru sand in search of authentic fossil to take home.

One of the items you will find at the Fossil Dig is Orthoceras. this was a type of shelled marine animal. They had heads, eyes and tentacles. They swam by squirting water out of their body cavity.

Dinosaurs in your classroom

I took my little one to school today for the first day and that makes me think about our school programs. Our Kentucky location offers outreach programs. So, if you cannot bring your class to Dinosaur World, let us bring our dinosaurs to you!

Outreach programs start at $200 per program. They are deisgned for preschool to 4th grade. Like any teaching setting, they work best with smaller groups, but can work up to 75 students. We bring fossils to the class and let them get hands on and we talk about what makes a dinosaur, a dinosaur. It's a great program. For more information call 270-773-4345 and ask for Chris Randall.

Unearth a dinosaur!

Our Boneyard is one of the most popular exhibits. Enter a unique prehistoric structure and find a giant sand pit. Once inside, you can unearth a life size dinosaur skeleton. There is seating to watch our paleontologists at work. Or, just play in the sand!

Facts about a lesser known dinosaur

Protoceratops was called “first horned face”and was a relatively small dinosaur with a proportionately large skull.

It had large orbits (the holes for its eyes), which measured around 50 millimeters in diameter. Protoceratops was an herbivore, a plant eater.

Protoceratops had a large head, a bulky body, a parrot-like beak, cheek teeth, and a well developed neck frill at the back of its head. This frill may have served to protect the neck, anchor jaw muscles, impress other members of the species, or combinations of these functions.

Protoceratops was about 6 feet long (2 m) and weighed roughly 400 pounds (180 kg). It was about 3 feet tall (to the top of the shoulders). It walked on four short legs, and was a relatively slow dinosaur.

Protoceratops was probably a herding animal. This hypothesis is supported by the finding of bone beds, large deposits of bones of the same species in an area, and large groups of nests. Each nest had 12 or more eggs, laid in a spiral fashion.

Calling All Teachers...

August means school starting - school starting means FIELD TRIPS!

Kentucky schools have already returned. We've already had some field trip bookings, but we'll be glad to take more. $5 per person for educational group. And, it's educational too! Here's one of our educational activities tying into core content and state curriculum...

Program of Studies: SC-P-UD-U-2 – Students will understand that plants and animals have features that help them live in different environments.
Program of Studies: SC-P-UD-S-4 – Students will analyze structures of plants and animals to make inferences about the types of environments for which they were suited.
Corresponding Activity
On the Dinosaur Walk, the students will see many different types of Dinosaurs. One of these dinosaurs is the Spinosaurus. An important feature of the Spinosaurus is the teeth. Scientists believed this dinosaur lived near water and used its spear like teeth to spear fish. Examples of the Spinosaurus tooth can also be found in the Prehistoric museum.
Another animal found on the Dinosaur Walk is the Ultrasaurus. This dinosaur was a plant eater. Unlike the Spinosaurus, this animal’s teeth were more suited for chewing and sawing plants instead of stabbing fish. Also notice the long neck, which would have been perfectly suited for eating the tops of trees. These examples will help the students understand certain features in animals help them adapt to their environment.

Trilobites

Trilobites were among the most numerous and varied marine animals of their time, ranging in length from about a quarter of an inch to over three feet. Like other arthropods, they could grow only by casting off their old shells. (The best known example of an arthropod outgrowing its shell today is the soft-shell crab.) So, many trilobite fossils are actually the cast off shells and not the animal itself.

The name trilobite refers to the three (tri-) sections of the body, the easiest way to identify a trilobite fossil. Trilobites also are known for their extremely well developed eyes.

School will be starting soon so make sure to get in that last summer outing. We're open every day and will make a great back to school trip.

Also since school is starting soon, go ahead and book that field trip! Our field trip rates begin at $5 per person with advance reservations.

Don't forget - when you visit in August, you'll get a free pass to come back any day in Decmeber (except Christmas Day in Texas and Kentucky).

Don't worry about the August heat - our dinosaur walk is very shaded. And, you can always cool off in the giftshop.

Texas just added an Acrocanthosaurus. This was appropriate because this big dinosaur's footprints can be found in the nearby Paluxy River. Kentucky added some baby dinosaurs this year and a Mammoth Garden last year. Florida just got an entire face lift for all their dinosaurs.

Our dinosaur walk is well shaded and fully paved. It is great for strollers, wheelchairs, wagons and such. If you decide you want a stroller when you arrive - you're in luck! We offer free strollers to our guests. They are on a first come basis, but we have many. - Just another added perk we have at Dinosaur World becuase we love you!

Silly Bands

Who would have thought silly bands were so important to a gift shop? Well, you guys have told us how important it is to have these, so we listened! We now have dinosaur silly bands in our gift shop. They are very cool, mutli colored, glow in the dark, you name it. $3.50 for a package.

Why are there no more Woolly Mammoths?

As warmer, wetter weather was beginning to take hold, rising sea levels swamped the coastal regions. Forests replaced open woodlands and grasslands. The Ice Age was ebbing. As habitats disappeared, so did mammoths.

Whether the general mammoth population died out for climatic reasons or due to overhunting by humans is controversial. A combination of climate change and hunting by humans is the most likely explanation for their extinction.

Since today is my son's birthday, I have parties on the brain. So, I decided to talk about birthday parties at Dinosaur World. What could be more fun than having your birthday with over 150 life size dinosaurs? Party rates are $6 per person for groups of 12 or more with advance reservations. This includes a fossil dig for each child where they can take home authentic fossils they find. And we do sell plenty of dinosaur party supplies.

Trees that knew dinosaurs

At our Kentucky location you can meet the ancient tree that knew the dinosaurs.

The Dawn Redwood is one of the only trees with the strength and growing power to be around when the dinosaurs roamed and still flourish today. This tree can grow up to 100 feet including six feet in just one year.

In early June of 2009, we planted ten Dawn Redwood trees. While you're visiting Kentucky, see if you can spot all ten.

Allosaurus Information

Poor Allosaurus! This perfectly respectable carnosaur is always overshadowed by T. rex. Even the meaning of its name, "other (or different) lizard," suggests that it is a rather second-rate dinosaur. In fact, the name refers to the distinct shape of the bones of its spine.

One of the largest North American meat-eaters, Allosaurus walked on its hind legs with its tail stretched out behind for balance. The powerful muscles and heavy bones of its legs made it possible for Allosaurus to move very fast. On each of its short arms, it had hands with three fingers, each with a sharp claw. Remains of Allosaurus have been found in North America and Australia, and some fossils from Africa and Asia may be those of Allosaurus. It is one of the most wide-spread of the meat-eaters.

We have great Allosaurus dinosaurs at Dinosaur World. The movie in the movie cave in Kentucky is all about the story of Big Al. Come check it out.

The 4th of July Holiday Weekend is coming up soon! Start making plans now on what to do with your family. Each admission includes a full day pass, so you can leave and return as much as you like. Take the family on a prehistoric journey into the past they will never forget.

Our Kentucky location is open until 8:00 during the summer, so stop by on your way to the fireworks. (Texas and Florida are open until 6:00).

Hadrosaur

Here's some information on our Hadrosaur. You can see authentic Hadrosaur eggs in our prehistoric museum and giftshop.

A living Hadrosaurus could tower over a human being. Nearly as tall as a two-story building, the animal might weigh up to four tons. The hadrosaurs are called "duckbills" because of their strange, toothless bills, with which they chopped and ground their food. They were herbivores (plant-eaters), and it is believed they were good swimmers.

Duckbills lived and traveled in herds, and laid eggs in communal nesting areas, the most famous of which are those of Maiasaura, which formed huge nesting colonies, like those of modern penguins. Some paleontologists believe they protected the eggs until hatched and continued to nurture the young afterwards.

Acrocanthosaurus released in Texas

Glen Rose is called the “Dinosaur Capitol of Texas” for a reason. In prehistoric times, the area was a hot bed of dinosaur activity. Actual dinosaur footprints from the ancient past are still visible in the Paluxy river running through the town. Currently, the area is still alive with dinosaurs at Dinosaur World, an outdoor dinosaur museum with over 100 life size dinosaurs.

Dinosaur World opened in March of 2008 with over 100 life size dinosaurs set in an outdoor dinosaur museum in the lush Texas hill country. In addition to the dinosaurs, other exhibits include a Fossil Dig, where visitors can sift though sand in search of authentic fossils to take home, an indoor Prehistoric Museum with fossils and replica skeletons, picnic areas, a huge 5,000 square foot giftshop of everything dinosaur and more.

Dinosaur World is again taking visitors on a journey into the past with the release of a life size forty foot Acrocanthosaurus. Texans hold a particular fondness for this dinosaurs, not just because of its larger than life size, but also because this is the giant carnivore whose tracks can be found on the banks of the Paluxy just a few feet up the road in Dinosaur Valley State Park.

“He’s impressive. That’s for sure,” said Dinosaur World’s Marketing Director Nicole Randall. “It was our plan from the beginning to bring him home. You will understand why it took a bit longer to get him here when you see him. It’s not something you forget. He’s quite extraordinary.” Acrocanthosaurus will now be the first of the over 100 dinosaurs to greet visitors as they begin their dinosaur walk.

Baryonyx means “heavy claw.” Paleontologists found that the large claw probably belonged on the thumb. Fish scales and Iguanodon bones were found in the area of the stomach, and this has lead scientists to believe it ate fish. They also found it possessed a long slender snout with 96 teeth shaped like crocodile teeth, which are good for grasping and holding prey. It is thought that the huge claw on its hand would have been used to reach into the water and hook the fish. Imagine them as huge reptilian grizzly bears, fishing with those terrible foot long claws.
